State of Denial: New York Fracking Ban Hurts New Yorkers
Yesterday, New York Gov. Cuomo’s administration issued a statewide ban on fracking, a move that denies New Yorkers – especially landowners in the Southern Tier –benefits associated with the drilling method that’s driving America’s energy revolution.
The Empire State is sitting on a major opportunity to fuel not only its future, but also America’s future. Next door in Pennsylvania, more than $630 million has been distributed to communities since 2012 from industry-paid fees – more than $224 million in 2014 alone. Areas of the state that just a few short years ago were economically challenged, are thriving.
Economic benefits aside, New Yorkers rely heavily on natural gas for their electricity – 54 percent of New York households use natural gas for home heating. Natural gas is the largest energy source for the state by far: In 2010, New York used approximately 1,198 Bcf of natural gas, making it the fourth-largest natural gas-consuming state in the nation. Where does this natural gas come from? You guessed it, fracking.
Bad news for New York, and bad news for America.
